PREFACE
Periodontology and implantology comprise everything that goes from the basics of patient motivation to the more sophisticated techniques of engineering tissue regeneration. In the field of regenerative techniques, GBR (Guided Bone Regeneration) has been a point of strong interest for the Authors for many years. GBR is a relatively new field that has changed over the years thanks to the research of new materials and technology, and to the contribution of scientific literature. Today there are consolidated techniques for bone regeneration.
According to the Authors, the GBR is an important clinical approach that has both advantages and disadvantages and, therefore, must be evaluated from case to case, before creating a treatment plan, comparing it with other more classic techniques of bone regeneration with established validity.
The Authors have developed the idea of dealing with the subject in an organic and articulated Atlas/textbook form, in order to explain in depth the various aspects of GBR with up to date information about the latest achievements.
This book was designed to be valuable in daily clinical practise with many useful tips.
This volume presents itself as a guide, as simple as possible, to the use of proper GBR techniques, proposing protocols that have been tested, in fifteen years of clinical experience.
The Atlas uses a rich iconography, many clinical cases are depicted in detail with schematic illustrations and easy reading explanatory texts, to help immediate understanding, presenting also changes made by the Authors to traditional treatment techniques.
This book is recommended not only for the new graduates in dentistry or for clinicians who have only recently begun to deal with implants, but also for those who are already engaged in periodontology and implantology and wish to improve and innovate their technical knowledge.

PRESENTATION

The growing development of biomedical sciences, the gradual acceleration of the process of change in scientific knowledge and dizzying acquisitition of new tecnhnologies suggest that traditional forms of treatment can be overcome by using new means of communication.
Thus becomes particularly important and interesting the creation of an Atlas such as that of Doctors Carlo Tinti and Stefano Parma Benfenati, an irreplaceable instrument of study, critical evaluation and deepening of new knowledge emerging in the quickly growing field of bone regeneration, used in implant therapy. The Authors have addressed this modern branch of medicine by writing a synthetic, absolutely clear, and exhaustive atlas.
The twelve chapters of the text are dealt with scientific rigor and with a splendid iconography. The biological principles of guided bone regeneration (GBR), are described in detail and the operating procedures are set out in every aspect demonstrating the possible surgical applications in different clinical situations. The text is supplemented by a large number of images, techniques are explained with the help of illustrations and models. The bibliography is succinct and rational.
This textbook is addressed to all specialists, but is particularly recommended, for it's refinement and indications of techniques, to those who are already experts in regenerative and implant therapy.
This unique effort, reflects the great professionalism, skill and preparation of the Authors, tireless and passionate surgeons that all Italian dentists know well. So fresh and alive, it deserves to be consulted by all lovers of discipline and certainly intended to meet enthusiastic support from colleagues, both doctors and dentists. A heartfelt and sincere praise also to the staff who has worked with Nike for the quality of the editorial presentation.
I wish to both my friends Carlo Tinti and Stefano Parma Benfenati great success with this opera, which will certainly reward their great endeavour.
